THE CLIMATE The DO Montsant falls within the Mediterranean climatic region, but the mountains around it cut it off from the sea's influence so that its climate also displays a certain continental character. This means there is a sharp difference between daytime and night-time temperatures which is very important in the proper ripening of the grapes. The coldest time of year is January, after which temperatures gradually rise until August, when they begin to fall. In any case, average temperatures are never extreme. Maximum temperatures do not rise above 20ºC, and the average minimum is around 7ºC. Rainfall is between 500 and 600mm, unevenly distributed throughout the year. Rain is concentrated in spring and autumn, and the driest period is in July and August, when there is a serious water deficit. In summer the wind that comes from the sea, loaded with humidity, represent an important source of water, so much so that it can mitigate the lack of water suffered by plants during this dry period. |
